Abstract:

is a major global human pathogen, and this chapter outlines the current state of knowledge regarding its diagnosis, treatment, and epidemiology. In addition, the genus is expanding, with more than 30 species now described. The chapter also covers these where appropriate and their impact on human health. Topics include a brief description of the current taxonomy of the genus, the current approaches to diagnosis, and identification. There is a section on antimicrobial susceptibility testing and the current levels of antimicrobial resistance in different countries around the world. The role of the non- gastric species is also discussed.

Phylogenetic tree of the genus based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity constructed using the neighbor-joining method. The bar represents the percentage of sequence divergence. Species marked in boldface type are urease positive; those in lightface type are urease negative. An asterisk (*) indicates species for which a genome sequence is either available or currently in progress. Strain collection catalogue and 16S rRNA gene sequence reference numbers (in parentheses) are given where available. A superscript T () denotes a type strain. doi:10.1128/9781555817381.ch57.f1
