Abstract:

This chapter is the prologue to The Other End of the Microscope: The Bacteria Tell Their Own Story. Microcosms are invisible creatures that compose the domain Bacteria. Also called prokaryotes, these microscopic one-celled beings are so ancient they lack even a nucleus. Nonetheless, they manifest a multitude of characters that only now are being recognized and understood. With the bacteria's flagella waving, their colorful coats ablaze, their gases bubbling and odors surging, the bacteria command our attention. The author creates an imaginary pond—Prokaryote Pond—at bottom of a shallow depression of land surrounded by low hills. For now the bacteria alone rule this unique and miraculous microcosm. The author asks readers to visualize the Prokaryote Pond as the stage of a huge microscope, with the readers looking down through the long lenses of imagination to find a world of minuteness that is both intricate and mysterious. The bacteria at center stage relate tales of wonder that evolved over billions of doubling times, explaining their unique place in the universe. The author assumes a position at stage center, standing before readers to ring in a saga that he hopes will give humans many thoughtful moments.
