Abstract:

This section is a session on the habitats and niches of microcosms. It begins with a review on the different natural habitats that prokaryotes have occupied for centuries. Legionella pneumophila and Helicobacter pylori relate interesting stories of how they have emerged to strike temporary fear into the human race. Legionella’s story is a prime example of how a peace-loving microbe, living contentedly in the waterways of the world, was suddenly transported to a new environment, with devastating effects on humans. Helicobacter relates the exciting and unique story of how it was able for several decades to remain undiscovered in the hostile acid environment of the human stomach, also causing considerable human misery in the form of gastritis, gastric ulcers, and even cancer.
