Abstract:

Beta-lactamases are important mediators of bacterial resistance to beta-lactam agents. Routine beta-lactamase tests are performed directly off bacterial colonies and are based on visual detection of the end products of beta-lactamase hydrolysis, demonstrated with a colorimetric reaction. These rapid tests primarily include the chromogenic cephalosporin method, the acidimetric method, and the iodometric method, summarized in Appendix 5.5–1 .
