Abstract:

In 1975, Yvonne Cossart first identified parvovirus particles by electron microscopy while evaluating tests for hepatitis B ( ). This new virus, detected in serum number 19 in plate B, has since been known as parvovirus B19. The most common diseases subsequently associated with parvovirus B19 include fifth disease or erythema infectiosum (EI) of childhood, polyarthralgias/polyarthritis, fetal hydrops, transient aplastic crisis in individuals with chronic hemolytic anemias, and chronic red cell-aplasia in immunocompromised hosts.
