Abstract:

In this book, I have intended to show that the whole field of microbiology, and in particular bacteriology, is in a vibrant and dynamic phase of growth. Many new concepts have appeared, and many others are about to emerge. This revolution will influence our daily lives, our diet, and our health care, as well as multiple fields of research in biology, medicine, agriculture, and industry and, it may be hoped, the protection of our environment.
