(chapter 1) Comparative organization around the MAT locus in the Ascomycota. The main horizontal line shows the organization of the MAT locus in homothallic species, or the idiomorph (where known) in heterothallic species. The organization of the a idiomorph is represented by the offset box below the idiomorph. The nomenclature suggested in reference 67 is used for the Pezizomycotina (e.g., 1-1-1 represents MAT1-1-1). Orthologous genes are connected by gray lines. Conserved groups of genes are indicated by color: red, idiomorph; green, a idiomorph; yellow, APN2; purple, SLA2 and homologs of S. cerevisiae XIV; orange, homologs of S. cerevisiae chromosome X; blue, homologs of S. cerevisiae chromosome III (YCR033W-YCR038W); white, homologs of S. cerevisiae chromosome III (YCR042C-YCR045C); gray, homologs of S. cerevisiae chromosome XI (YLR186W-YLR182W); gray gradient, CAN1 (YEL063C). The position of an Ho endonuclease site in MATa1 is marked where present. The figure was redrawn from Butler et al. (9), with additional information for G. zeae (73), M. grisea (http://www.broad.mit.edu/annotation/fgi/ and GenBank accession numbers AB080673 and AB080672), C. immitis (http://www.broad.mit.edu/annotation/fgi/), Aspergillus (21), Y. lipolytica (17), and A. gossypii (15).

(chapter 23) Comparison of the regions containing the mating-type gene complexes from U. hordei and U. maydis. The top box represents the 527-kb U. hordei MAT-1 region (refer to EMBL accession no. AM118080). The bottom boxes represent the U. maydis contigs harboring the homologs (compare with Fig. 23.2). The overview illustrates the gross rearrangements present in these areas and illustrates the conservation of synteny in local regions, as well as the accumulation of repetitive sequences (blue boxes) in U. hordei MAT-1. See the legend to Fig. 23.2 for explanation of gene names. Note that the genes are not drawn to scale and the figure indicates the approximate sizes of the blocks of genes to display their arrangements and orientations relative to the repeats found in the MAT-1 locus. Numbers refer to coordinates in kilobases. See reference 8 for more details. Reprinted from Fungal Genetics & Biology (reference 8, Fig. 2) © 2006, with permission from Elsevier.
