Asymptomatic bacteriuria is the presence of bacteria in the normally sterile urine of the bladder or kidneys, together with the absence of clinical signs or symptoms attributable to urinary tract infection ( 1 ). Asymptomatic bacteriuria is also referred to as asymptomatic urinary tract infection and, occasionally, bladder colonization. In this chapter, the terms asymptomatic urinary infection, asymptomatic bacteriuria, and bacteriuria are used interchangeably, and the discussion is also relevant to asymptomatic candiduria. Bacteriuria, when present, may be restricted to the bladder, or may involve one or both kidneys. Bacteria in the prostate in men will not be discussed.
