Abstract:

The use of antimicrobial agents has resulted in the subsequent development of resistance by bacteria to such agents, with increased transmission of several significant antimicrobial-resistant pathogenic microorganisms within the health care system ( ; see also https://www.cdc.gov/drugresistance/pdf/ar-threats-2013-508.pdf and http://www.jpiamr.eu/document-library/strategicresearchagenda). These bacteria include methicillin-resistant (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant (VRE), extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Gram-negative bacteria, and carbapenemase-producing Gram-negative enteric bacteria (CPE). The transmission of these antimicrobial-resistant organisms (AROs) has the potential to negatively impact patient morbidity and mortality ( ).
