Only some individuals become ill when exposed to pathogenic bacteria or other microorganisms, and the severity of the illness can vary from person to person. This may be due to variations in the pathogen responsible for the illness (some strains of a bacterial species can be more virulent than others), to environmental factors, or to genetic differences between infected individuals.
