Abstract:

I was 10 years old, and my brother was eight. My parents were leaving us alone for the very first time, allowing me to babysit my brother, but in reality, it was more about both of us helping each other out. Before leaving, my parents walked through a strict set of instructions about what to do if a stranger came to the door after they had left. They went through all scenarios and set expectations for us. This happened over several days until the day finally arrived. I remember being excited. I was going to cook dinner and make sure everything was done according to plan. It was an exciting chance to prove myself and be free from my mom and dad for a couple of hours.
