Abstract:

Most people spend their lives avoiding infectious diseases, using vitamins, vaccines, medications, face masks, and other strategies to stay healthy. But infectious disease pioneers are eager and willing to do their jobs even when their lives are at risk. The public may believe they are crazy for wanting to work with and around infectious diseases, thinking of these pioneers as “adrenaline junkies” or as taking absurd risks with large drums of biological agents. The truth of what infectious disease pioneers do is further clouded by portrayals in Hollywood movies such as , in which the handling of biological agents is shown in ways that are completely unfounded in reality. Unlike those rogue infectious disease workers portrayed in films, the day-to-day work of most real-world infectious disease pioneers revolves around precaution and careful planning. The four primary controls of safety, which I discuss in this chapter, provide a framework of multiple safety redundancies for infectious disease pioneers working in biological laboratories or health care facilities to minimize risks to acceptable levels.
